What hotspot is good for
Tethering is the right tool for a laptop on a work trip, a tablet in a hotel, or a backup connection when home internet goes out for an afternoon. It uses your phone as the modem, on the same Blue network your line already uses.
Unlimited plans publish a high-speed threshold of 100 GB of 5G data, after which speeds are reduced. Our Open Internet Policy also notes that during periods of high congestion, customers who have used very large amounts of data in a billing cycle may see reduced speeds until the network is less congested.
Plan thresholds are disclosed on the plan page, and the acceptable use policy asks that tethering stay within the limits stated on your plan.
Phone hotspot vs Global Hotspot plans
These are separate products and it is worth being precise about the difference.
The hotspot allowance above is part of your phone plan: it runs off your phone, in the US, on the Blue network.
Global Hotspot plans are standalone data plans on a vSIM for a dedicated hotspot device, running on partner networks across 140+ countries. They are bought separately, sized from 25 GB to 200 GB to 450 GB, and are not part of a phone plan.
If you need Wi-Fi for a group while travelling internationally, that is the Global Hotspot product. If you need to get a laptop online occasionally in the US, your phone plan already covers it.
Not a home internet replacement
Hotspot is a mobile convenience, not a household connection. For always-on internet at an address, Internet Air is the product built for it — $54.99/mo, no data caps, no overage fees, no contracts, with availability varying by address.
