Is my phone unlocked and eSIM compatible? How to check in 2 minutes

Bringing your own phone to S Mobile Wireless saves you the cost of a new device — but it only works if your phone is unlocked and compatible with our network. Both take about two minutes to check.

By S Mobile Wireless · Updated

1. Is your phone unlocked?

A locked phone only works with the carrier that sold it. An unlocked phone works with any compatible carrier.

  • iPhone: go to Settings → General → About and look for "Carrier Lock." If it says "No SIM restrictions," your iPhone is unlocked.
  • Android: menus differ by maker. The most reliable test is to insert a SIM from another carrier — if you can make a call, it's unlocked. Some Android phones also show unlock status under Settings → Connections or Settings → About phone.
  • Still not sure? Ask your current carrier. Only the carrier that locked a phone can unlock it, and each carrier sets its own requirements, such as the device being paid off.

2. Does your phone support eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. With eSIM you can activate service without waiting for a physical SIM card in the mail.

No eSIM? You can still choose a physical SIM card at checkout.

  • Quick test: dial *#06#. If an "EID" number appears, your phone has eSIM.
  • iPhone: iPhone XR, XS and newer support eSIM. iPhone 14 and newer models sold in the US are eSIM-only.
  • Android: many recent Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Motorola phones support eSIM, but not every model or regional version does.

3. Run our compatibility check

Unlocked and eSIM-ready isn't the whole story. Your phone also needs to support the network bands we use. Our free compatibility checker uses your phone's IMEI number (dial *#06# to find it) to confirm whether it will work on S Mobile Wireless.

If your phone isn't compatible

You can browse brand-new, unlocked phones from Apple, Samsung, Google and Motorola, and if you're replacing an old phone, you can sell it to us for cash.

Frequently asked questions

Will my number transfer?

Yes. You can keep your number when you switch; you'll need your current account number and transfer PIN from your carrier.

Can I use a phone that's still being paid off?

Usually not until it's unlocked. Most carriers won't unlock a phone with a balance remaining. Check with your carrier.

Does S Mobile Wireless unlock phones?

No. Only the carrier that locked the phone can unlock it.
